Eyelid Surgery
Women and men who can benefit from eyelid surgery are typically those who suffer from an array of aesthetic imperfections around the upper or lower eyelids. These include puffiness and droopiness that not only make individuals look unhappy and tired but perhaps older than they really are. These imperfections can also affect vision. Eyelid surgery may not the best option for those wishing to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet or wrinkles; however, other treatments such as injectable fillers or facelift surgery can address those issues.

Our plastic surgeons will meet with you in an eyelid surgery consultation to determine if the procedure is the right one to meet your ultimate goals.

Eyelid Surgery Procedure
Depending on your own unique needs, eyelid surgery can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both.

• Upper eyelid surgery typically involves the removal of excess skin that is affecting your vision and/or giving you a tired,  haggard appearance. The remaining skin is lifted and reattached for a smoother, more refreshed look. Upper eyelid surgery can also help improve vision for those with drooping skin that is affecting your ability to see. Incisions for the procedure are made in the crease of the upper eyelid, so residual scarring should be barely visible. A local anesthetic or general anesthetic can be used for upper eyelid surgery. The procedure is generally performed as an outpatient and takes from one to three hours to complete.

• Lower eyelid surgery is mainly performed to reduce the appearance of bagginess under the eyes. A small incision is made under the lower eyelashes and excess skin, fat, and muscle are removed. The remaining skin is reshaped into a smoother and firmer appearance. This procedure is typically completed under local anesthesia on an outpatient basis, and takes from one to three hours to complete.

Eyelid surgery can be performed at one of our fully-equipped new operating rooms, at the Elena Ocher Medical facility. These new operatories are certified by the AAAHC signifying adherence to the highest standards of medical care.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery
Our plastic surgeon will likely lubricate your eyes with a special ointment after eyelid surgery. Patients can expect some degree of swelling and bruising during the first two weeks of recovery. Any discomfort can be alleviated with medication. Patients may also experience sensitivity to light, tearing, and temporary blurry or double vision. Normal routines can typically be resumed after a few days. Strenuous activities should be avoided for at least two to three weeks after eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty).

Patients should be aware that plastic surgeons at the Long Island Plastic Surgical Group are experienced and skilled physicians who make every effort to minimize risks. We work diligently to ensure eyelid surgery and their recovery process is safe, smooth, and effective. Our commitment is to give you natural-looking results that help you achieve your goals.
